The first street on the Jaffa shore. Taken on the 1st of January 1914 just before the beginning of WWI when many young Palestinian men arrived at the port to escape being recruited into the Ottoman army. Palestine lost a serious amount of young men who hopped on a ship and left for the Americas to never come back. This is Harbour Street, with protruding covered balconies with three-sided windows looking at the sea, built in a unique architectural style that lives with the tide, western wind, strong sun, and splashing sea salt. This road continues to the north to Haifa and Akka (Acre) and to the south to Gaza. “Palestine Remembered“
